Lunatraktors and Masal

A night of radical folk and psychedelia

Lunatraktors and Masal at the nest
sat

oct
time 7.00pm
Oxford

A double bill of "broken folk" duo Lunatraktors and psychedelic groovers Masal, in the intimate and inclusive space of The Nest.

Lunatraktors is a double act consisting of Carli Jefferson (she/her) and Clair Le Couteur (they/them). Lunatraktors’ 'broken folk' blends Le Couteur’s channelled voices of multiple tragicomic characters with Jefferson's hybrid of tap dance, flamenco and body percussion. Added resonances come from Le Couteur’s free-reed instruments, whistles and analogue synth. Reimagining Anglo-Celtic folk through jungle, drum’n’bass, triphop, art rock and post-punk, Lunatraktors have built up a passionate fanbase at festivals, galleries, museums, theatres and queer cabarets.

Their DIY debut This Is Broken Folk – percussion and vocals recorded live in a viaduct arch by Ramsgate harbour – made MOJO Magazine's Top Ten Folk Albums of 2019. Second album The Missing Star was #2 in MOJO Magazine’s Top Ten Folk Albums of 2021.

"The songs and voices of Carli Jefferson and Clair Le Couteur pass through the ears to reach the soul directly." Ouest-France, France

English-Turkish instrumental duo Masal blend eastern and western classical influences with experimental electronics. Özlem Simsek peforms on harp, theremin and vocals, while Alastair Johnson generates electronics. Their jazzy breakbeats and psychedelic grooves take the listener on a journey of unexpected twists and turns, from wild stomps to ethereal drops of sound.

Masal’s album “The Galloping Cat” with collaborator Andy Bell was released in 2024. They have performed at festivals including Altered Images, Septembersong, and Mickfest (Colchester), and their music has been played on BBC Radio 6.

An oxfordshire singer-songwriter whose music sits in acoustic folk and americana territory, built around candid, personal storytelling. His 2018 single 'stories from the past' — produced at milkman studios — gives a good sense of the warm, heartfelt writing at the core of his work.
