American hard rock band formed on long island in 1967, mixing heavy riffs with psychedelia and occult, fantastical lyrics that shaped heavy metal. They found mainstream success with (don't fear) the reaper, godzilla and burnin' for you, still classic rock radio staples, and have sold around 25 million records.
