The Brighton Beach Boys present The 1966 Show

The Beach Boys and The Beatles defined 1960s popular music through distinct yet complementary approaches. The Beatles revolutionised rock with innovative studio techniques and genre experimentation, while the Beach Boys elevated pop through intricate vocal harmonies and sophisticated arrangements. Pet Sounds (1966) stands as Brian Wilson's masterwork—a symphonic pop album featuring lush orchestration, unconventional instruments, and deeply personal lyrics that influenced countless artists. The Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (1967) responded with its concept album format, studio effects, and genre-blending ambition, effectively transforming albums into cohesive artistic statements rather than mere collections of singles. The Beatles' impact on songwriting structure, studio experimentation, and the very concept of the album as an art form remains unparalleled. Their work legitimised rock as serious music and inspired progressive rock, psychedelia, and countless other movements. The Beach Boys pioneered complex vocal arrangements and demonstrated that pop music could achieve symphonic depth. Wilson's innovations in production and harmony influenced artists from The Beatles themselves to modern indie and chamber pop acts. Both groups proved that popular music could be both commercially successful and artistically ambitious, fundamentally reshaping what audiences expected from rock and pop music. Their creative rivalry pushed both bands toward their greatest achievements. This show is part of the celebrations of the sixtieth anniversary of the University of Sussex being established at Falmer. The show will features Glen Richardson, Stephen Wrigley, Adrian Marshall, and Charlotte Glasson.
