Bhob Rainey

Aural Detritus Concert Series are excited to present Bhob Rainey live in Brighton as part of his UK tour. Bhob Rainey is a saxophonist, composer, and improviser. On the saxophone he has developed a distinctive, hallucinatory vocabulary that often sounds electronic, interspersed with an uncanny mastery of multiphonics. In 1998 he co-founded the duo nmperign with trumpeter Greg Kelley, touring extensively while upending a host of improvisational givens. Seeking to bring rigor to improvisation at a larger scale, he later formed The BSC, an eight-piece ensemble that navigated the challenges of group improvisation without relying on predetermined structures or cues. Their work and practices were explored in the 2011 book and album, Manual. Rainey additionally has a long list of collaborators and an especially refined solo saxophone style. He was awarded a Pew Fellowship in the Arts in 2013 for his work in this field. Aural Detritus Concert Series are pleased to present Bhob in a trio with Phil Durrant and Paul Khimasia Morgan. Phil Durrant is a composer, electronicist and veteran participant in the London free music scene. A key figure alongside Mark Wastell and Rhodri Davies and others in New London Silence, Phil collaborates widely; with John Butcher, Bill Thompson or Martin Vishnick among others, has been part of Trio Sowari with Bertrand Denzler and Burkhard Beins, MIMEO with Keith Rowe, Kaffe Matthews, Thomas Lehn, Rafael Toral and others and is a regular participant in Mark Wastell's THE SEEN. Phil co-organises Streatham's regular Sound Bureau free improv events with Tansy Spinks. Paul Khimasia Morgan is an improvisor who utilises acoustic guitar body with feedback systems. He works with Steve Beresford and Faradena Afifi, Teresa Hackel, Adam Bushell and others. Support is from Simian Carbuncle; the Brighton-based duo of Adrian Southby and Matt Clark, and the music performances will be interspersed with spoken word readings by The Wire's Daniel Spicer.
